Polonnaruwa
The temples, carvings and palace ruins of an ancient capital.
Polonnaruwa was once a royal capital. Today, its old buildings survive as ruins spread across a large area. Some are easy to recognise, while others need a closer look to understand what once stood there. A guide can help connect the separate sites into the story of the city.
You will see palace remains, religious buildings and stone entrances with detailed carvings. At Gal Vihara, large Buddha figures are carved into the rock. Take time to look at their faces and the folds of their robes rather than moving straight on to the next stop.
The tall brick walls in the photos help you imagine the size of the old buildings. Walk around them where access is allowed and look at the openings and surviving foundations. Seeing the ruins from more than one side often makes their layout easier to understand.
The water scenes give a different view of the wider area beyond the ruins. A quiet stop beside a reservoir can break up a day of looking at old buildings. Ask your driver where you can stop safely, and enjoy the water from a suitable path or viewing area.
Plan transport between the sites, as this is more than one short walk. Bring water and sun protection, and dress respectfully for sacred areas. A break between groups of ruins makes the visit easier, especially on a hot day.
