Arugam Bay
Surfing, sandy shores and an easy pace on the east coast.
Arugam Bay draws surfers to the east coast, but you do not have to surf to enjoy a stay. The bay, small cafes and sandy lanes make it a place where days can pass without much of a plan. There is room for both early starts and long breakfasts.
Spend time watching the waves or explore the coast and nearby lagoon areas. Away from the main beach, the surrounding countryside gives you a different view of the area. You can make a few short outings and still spend most of the stay close to the water.
You can shape a day around the beach without spending every hour in the water. Watch the surfers, take a walk along the sand and find somewhere shaded for lunch. A slower afternoon also leaves time to explore the lanes close to where you are staying.
Tell your trip planner whether you want surf lessons, a quiet stay or a mix of short outings. That helps with choosing accommodation and deciding how long to stay. If you are continuing to a park or another coastal town, leave a little breathing room between travel days.
If you want to try surfing, find an instructor who can choose a suitable spot for your level. Ask about swimming conditions too, since waves and currents vary. Leave enough time here to settle into the pace rather than arriving for a quick photograph and moving on.
