Pidurangala
A rocky climb with a clear view across to Sigiriya.
Pidurangala sits close to Sigiriya, and its main draw is the view of the famous rock from across the trees. The walk starts at a Buddhist temple, then follows steps and a rough path uphill. Trees shade much of the lower route.
On the way up, you pass a reclining Buddha beneath a rock shelter. Near the top, the steps give way to large boulders. You need to use your hands in places to get through them. Beyond this section is an open rock surface, with Sigiriya standing in the distance.
The photos show both the open views and the rocky part of the climb. The broad summit looks quite different from the narrow gaps on the way up. Leave your hands free for the boulder section and give other walkers room to pass.
Once you reach the top, take a moment to look across the trees towards Sigiriya. Cloud and mist can change the view while you are there. A short pause often gives you time to notice the smaller hills and patches of countryside beyond the main rock.
Wear shoes that grip well and dress respectfully for the temple. The last part needs more care than an ordinary walk. If anyone in your group finds climbing difficult, it helps to discuss the route before setting off.
