Mirissa
Beach days and palm-covered viewpoints on the south coast.
Mirissa is a place to put down your bags and spend some time by the sea. The main bay has sand, places to eat and room for a walk along the water. You can keep the day simple, with breakfast, beach time and a late lunch.
Coconut Tree Hill is one of the area's best-known viewpoints. Palms stand above the sea, and the coast stretches away on either side. Around the bay, small outings can be fitted between long breaks rather than turning the whole stay into a sightseeing trip.
The photos show the coast from above and the palms at Coconut Tree Hill in evening light. From the headland, you can look back along the bays and see how the beach, rocks and buildings fit together. Keep to firm ground when walking around the viewpoint.
A beach stay here does not need a different activity every day. You might walk early, spend the hottest hours in the shade and come back out for an evening meal. Leave room for a change of plans if the water is rough or the beach is busier than expected.
Take care on rocks and near the edges of viewpoints. The sea is not always calm, so ask about conditions before swimming. Mirissa also makes an easy coastal stop alongside a visit to Galle or other towns in the south.
