Kitulgala

Rafting on the Kelani River and walks through green countryside.

Kitulgala is a small town beside the Kelani River, surrounded by wooded hills and green countryside. It is best known for white-water rafting and is often included as an outdoor stop on a journey between the west of the island and the hill country.

On a guided rafting trip, you paddle with a group and follow the instructions of your river guide. The experience depends on the water level and conditions that day. If you prefer to stay on land, ask about a local walk or spend time at a riverside stay watching the water.

The extra photos show waterfall abseiling, a rock shelter and a natural water slide. These are different outings from rafting, so ask about each one separately. You may need different equipment or more time than you first expect.

Choose activities around the comfort of your whole group. Someone who enjoys a river trip may not want to descend a waterfall, and that is fine. A walk or a quiet break by the river can be part of the same stay without everyone doing the same thing.

Before booking, ask about the route, equipment and any age or fitness requirements. Choose an operator who explains the activity clearly and provides helmets and life jackets. Let them know your experience level so they can advise whether the trip is suitable for you.
